MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The National Weather Service has ended the Ice Storm Warning for the entire WREG viewing area. The Winter Weather Advisory has also been canceled for all counties, except Marshall, Benton, Lafayette, Panola and Tallahatchie counties in Mississippi and Hardeman County in Tennessee.
The Winter Weather Advisory will remain in effect until 1 p.m. Thursday.
WREG’s Todd Demers said that conditions are improving for the most part across the Mid-South. There have been reports of freezing rain in parts of Memphis and Mississippi around noon, but he said if you encounter that it will be light and won’t last long.
Temperatures at noon were in the upper 20s to lower 30s, meaning they have not fluctuated that much over the course of the day.
The biggest problem moving forward is still the ice on the roadways and on trees and power lines.
WREG’s Wendy Nations was in Desoto County, Mississippi, where she reported wind gusts of 15 to 20 miles per hour early Thursday morning. She said the cold temperatures means the ice on the trees and power lines will not have a chance to melt. Couple with those high winds, it could cause more trees and power lines to come down.
The National Weather Service said ice accumulation could be up to three-quarters of an inch in some areas, particularly in east Arkansas and northwest Mississippi.
