MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Police are on the hunt for a serial sexual assault suspect, who has reportedly been targeting women in apartments over the last two years.

WREG reported police believe the suspect wore a mask and committed five sexual assaults.

During each of the break-ins, police said the attacker broke into apartments through windows or patio doors.

The Family Safety Center took WREG to Home Depot to talk about better ways to keep the bad guys out.

Home Depot Customer Order Specialist Marico Frazier said that could start with attaching window bars.

“It might not stop them all together, but it’ll take longer for them to maneuver through this if there’s a faulty window,” Frazier said.

Also, Frazier suggested residents consider a door lock.

It is a product that kind of looks like a pole.

He said homeowners can prop them under a door handle to prevent a door from getting forced open or lay them down horizontally to protect sliding doors.

Our experts said another tip is to put up warning signs, like “Beware of Dog” near your apartment or near your property.

A potential attacker does not necessarily know if the warnings are real or not.

There are also measures renters can take without buying anything.

“Have good lighting outside. If you’ve got an outdoor light, keep that turned on, because if somebody can see them, there’s a lot less of a risk that you’re going to be attacked,” said Family Safety Center Spokesperson Jordan Moore-Howard.

Moore-Howard also encouraged residents to check and be sure they lock their doors.

WREG’S experts added that folks might want to consider purchasing hornet spray for their home in the event an attacker makes it inside.

It acts like mace but can spray about 25 feet.
