MEMPHIS, Tenn. — It was announced on Friday Inland Waste, the company responsible for picking up your trash will continue to be employed by the city.
The City sent out a statement saying they started monitoring the company on June 24 after receiving numerous complaints from residents about late pickup.
The notice gave Inland 15 days to clean up their act or hit the road.
On Friday, a spokesperson from the city released the following statement:
“During this 15 day period, Solid Waste personnel has monitored Inland’s service area for trash and debris sitting on the curb as well as the call volume regarding missed collections and believed that significant improvement have been made as of today and does not see a need to dispatch City crews into the area serviced by Inland.
The City of Memphis staff plans to continue its strict monitoring of Inland’s performance and will not hesitate to hold Inland to their contractual obligations to the City of Memphis if that need arises.”
Earlier this week, WREG’s Siobhan Riley spoke with residents who were dealing with this problem first hand.
“I think it’s a shame for all the money we pay in taxes and our taxes increase because of the school system that they can’t get the trash regulated and picked up on time,” said Victoria Bromley who lived in Germantown.
Bromley said she complained to the city when her trash pick up was several days late.
“We called the city before 5:00 that day, and they said we’ll send somebody right out. Nobody came out for the past week. We had bags of trash piled up in our garage because we had two weeks worth of trash. You can’t take it to a dumpster because that’s illegal, and we didn’t know what to do,” she said.
“Does seem like a lot. I mean Germantown has 35,000 people, that’s quite a lot of missed pickups,” said resident Richard Prendergast.
Inland told the city rerouting drivers caused some problems.
However, homeowners just wanted better service
“They need to be either given a chance to follow the contract or they need to be taken to court. The contract needs to be broken, and we need to find someone who will do the job correctly,” said Bromley.
