Inmate Bus Crashes on Freeway

(Memphis, TN) The accident happened around 5:30 p.m. Thursday when the driver of a Shelby County correctional bus rear-ended a car on Interstate 240.

Nobody was hurt but 28 inmates sat in the bus for more than an hour as police officers took pictures of the crash scene.

Also, a handful of correctional staff, including the jail’s deputy director, came out to evaluate the situation.

Police say while the accident was unusual, it was not a big deal.

Officials say the inmates are low-risk offenders who had spent the day working at a warehouse in North-East Shelby County.

They were headed back to the jail when this fender-bender occurred.

After police wrapped up their investigation, a back-up van was brought in as a precaution in case the bus broke down on the way back to  jail.

On top of the accident, construction on the interstate also added to this major traffic jam.

Police say they gave the driver of the correctional bus a ticket for being at fault in the crash.
