WASHINGTON — A man from Washington state and his family were stunned when his nephew opened his Christmas present to find the sound effects were not what they were expecting.
The toy plane Bjorn Thorpe bought for the 3-year-old was suppose to make flying sounds.
Instead the toy began reciting an Islamic prayer said during the pilgrimage to Mecca.
The president of the Islamic Society of Whatcom County, Nadeem Israr, confirmed the audio, reported KING-TV.
“We put the batteries in and didn’t get what we expected,” Thorpe told the news station. “I do respect other religions, but it’s not the right situation to have it on a children’s toy.”
According to reports, similar complaints have been made on Amazon.
WREG looked at the reviews.
“Not as advertised,” one dissatisfied customer wrote. “Does not play jet noises. Plays an Arabic chant that is extremely bizarre for a child’s toy.”
“The plane sounds are good but when it hits an objects it start chanting in Arabic, not sure why it triggers that,” posted another.
However, not every customer reported hearing the prayer.
“My step son will not put this plane down, his had jet sounds not middle eastern chants. Not sure if there are duds in each batch. Anyways, super cool toy!”
The company who makes the toy, WolVol, blamed the manufacturer saying they must have shipped out the bad batch.
