Teen who brought gun to Millington Middle told officers he brought it for protection

MILLINGTON, Tenn. — A 14-year-old is charged after bringing a stolen gun to a school in Millington.

The gun was not loaded.

That gun was linked to a robbery, and now Shelby County deputies said that teen’s crime led them to a 13-year-old who is responsible for the theft of a gun and a sword.

“That’s scary,” said Angela Porter, who lives on the street.

Porter said she’s used to hearing about break-ins on her street, but she was worried when WREG told her someone stole a gun from one house on the 7700 block of Commodore last week.

“I’ve always heard of a lot of thefts in this neighborhood, but I’ve also seen Shelby County Sheriff’s SUVs driving through a lot, so I think they’re really trying to crack down on it,” she said.

The 13-year-old admitted to stealing the gun and sword and is charged with aggravated burglary and theft of property under $500.

As far as the teen accused of bringing the gun to school, this is what officers said:

“Once we questioned the individual at the school that brought the gun, we were able to ascertain where he got it from, and that led us to where we believe the burglary took place, and we’ll start to move forward from there,” Washington said.

Officers said the serial number also helped with the investigation.

Parents are concerned about what the teen told officers when asked why he brought the gun.

“His reasoning was he felt like he needed protection, he felt like maybe he was being threatened, and he felt like if he brought a gun to school maybe that would stop that issue,” Washington said.

“It’s dangerous, it could have been loaded,” said a neighbor.
