Judge D’Army Bailey passes away at 73

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -Civil rights activist Judge D’Army Bailey passed away Sunday afternoon.

Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell sent the following statement:

“Judge Bailey was a dedicated public servant. He served with fairness and professionalism in the judicial arena. ”

“Moreover, his guidance and expertise on civil rights and other community initiatives led to greater opportunities for the citizens of Shelby County.”

“All of us at Shelby County Government extend our sympathy to his family.”

Judge Bailey was a Circuit Court Judge and civil rights activists.

He stepped down from the bench to practice law in 2009, after servicing as a judge for 19-years.

Bailey then returned to the bench last year to serve another four years.

Former Congressman Harold Ford Sr. sent the following statement:

“I am deeply saddened to learn of the loss of my dear friend the Honorable D’Army Bailey. Judge Bailey has offered so much to the Memphis community, the State of Tennessee,and the nation as a public servant in the judiciary and as an unwavering advocate for justice. ”

“Our community was made better by his years of service, his stunning intellect and a deep appreciation for the rule of law. ”

“We should all be thankful for his tireless efforts and leadership. He will be truly missed by many, and I will personally miss him and the friendship I shared with he and his family. ”

Mr. Bailey was also a founder of the National Civil Rights Museum and was an author.

The longtime civil rights activist also wrote a book on his experience from the early 1960’s.

Bailey was 73-years-old.
