Judge: Memphis daycare will remain closed after child locked in alone

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A judge has ruled a Memphis daycare center will remain closed.

A 2-year-old boy was found inside the Discovery Zone Learning Center on Dec. 7.

A woman went to pick up her 2-year-old at the daycare, but her son was locked inside crying, with nobody else around.

That’s when the mother called 911.

Officers forced their way into the building to get the child.

At a Friday hearing, the owner of the center said staff did not follow procedures and changes have been made since the incident.

An employee left the boy in a room because she was pregnant and could not carry the child.

Another teacher was reportedly supposed to move the child.

The other teacher said they were never notified.

The employee involved was reportedly fired immediately.

The same center has had several violations since 2014.

A number of the citations were regarding supervision and surrounded incidents where there were too many students and not enough teachers. There were also situations where evaluators noted children just weren’t properly supervised.
