JACKSON, Tenn. — Jackson Mayor Jerry Gist named Julian Wiser as the new Jackson chief of police.

Wiser, who had been serving as the interim police chief since October 2014, was officially sworn in Wednesday morning.

Gist said this action “continues the effort to intervene and take Jackson beyond the type of issues that cities across our nation are facing.”

“Chief Wiser has good discernment in his leadership, an informed focus on fighting crime and an engaging kindness to establish good relationships with the people of Jackson,” he said.

Wiser has worked for the Jackson Police Department for 19 years, with many years spent in the Special Operations Division. He is a Marines veteran who has also served as an officer for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the FBI and the U.S. Marshals Service.

“I am honored by Mayor Gist’s confidence in my ability to lead the city of Jackson Police Department,” Wiser said. “I look forward to continuing public safety measures for the prosperity of the community.”
