SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. — Emotions were running high after a juvenile was pronounced dead following a shooting at the Ashland Lake Apartments in Shelby County.
The sound of a gunshot inside the apartment complex off Stateline Road caught some off-guard Monday night.
“One round, I just heard one shot. That’s all I heard,” said one witness who did not want to be identified.
He told WREG’s Jerrita Patterson he knew something wasn’t right instantly. After hearing the sound, he heard Shelby County deputies moving in.
“I would say within 15 minutes, they were on the scene and they had locked everything down,” he said.
They quickly outlined the area with crime scene tape. In a desperate attempt, one man tried barging into the area. He was stopped but in the witness’ video you could hear him saying “a little girl got shot in the head.”
“Coming up on the scene and you know he was yelling at the police,” recalled the witness.
Authorities have not provided any details about the victim except to confirm they were a juvenile. neighbors told WREG the victim was an 11-year-old girl who had been seen riding bikes with other kids earlier that day.
“It’s overwhelming, overwhelming, you know what I’m saying,” said the witness. “Just heartbreaking to see that happen these days you know.”
Investigators were on the scene for hours Monday evening interviewing witnesses, but as of now, no word on who may have pulled the trigger. If you know anything, call Crime Stoppers at (901) 528-CASH.
