(Memphis) From Overton High School’s marching band to the Super Bowl.
You saw Kameron Whalum dancing and playing his trombone beside Bruno Mars during the most watched Super Bowl in history.
Now, less than a week later, Whalum still can’t wrap his mind around it.
“It was above all my dreams I ever thought, man, it was. I can’t even find the words. It was incredible,” Whalum said.
Whalum has been active in performing arts since his time as a student at Overton High.
Now he’s on a world tour with Bruno Mars, heading to Australia in less than a month.
He’s been a part of Bruno Mars’s band for three years.
“Started out just being a background horn player, and that evolved into dancing and singing and just putting on a show,” said Whalum.
Whalum performed on WREG’s Live at 9 Thursday, and says the Super Bowl isn’t the peak for him and he has big plans for the future.
Right now, he’s working on exploring his own vocal talent.
“To see that everyone loved it and after all the work we put in it was the most watched Super Bowl in history, we beat out Madonna, Prince, Beyoncé, that’s just incredible to me,” said Whalum.
Whalum comes from a very musically gifted family. His uncle is Grammy award-winning saxophone player Kirk Whalum.
As for kids in Memphis with a love for music and entertainment, Whalum has some advice.
“Don’t give up. If you’ve got dreams there is nothing wrong with dreaming and working for it. If you want to do it just do it,” said Whalum.
Kameron Whalum will be performing Friday night at 9 at the Hard Rock Café on Beale.
As for rumors the band wasn’t actually performing during halftime, Whalum says he can’t speak for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but the Bruno Mars Band played live.
