MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Kirby High School teacher has been arrested for aggravated sexual battery and sexual battery by an authority figure after he allegedly fondled a student.

The teacher, David Burnett, 33, is accused of fondling the 14-year-old student while the student dozed off in the school’s TV studio Tuesday.

The teen told his mother he woke up with his pants unzipped, unbuttoned, and pulled down. The teen told his mother Burnett then touched him inappropriately.

Parents at the school said teachers need more screening, but they trusted the school’s principal to get to the bottom of what happened.

Wednesday, another student reported that Burnett had made an inappropriate comment to him on Oct. 16.

Shelby County Schools said Burnett has been suspended without pay while Memphis Police investigate the case.

The Kirby High School website lists Burnett as a careers and technology teacher, we understand from multiple sources he taught broadcasting classes at the school.
