MEMPHIS, Tenn. — An officer-involved shooting during a traffic stop that led to the death of 19-year-old Darrius Stewart had many of you asking about your rights when police pull you over.
“It is hard to say no when an officer who is an authority figure tells you that you need to do this, but you don’t have to say anything,” said Attorney Murray Wells.
Wells said if you’re not driving, you don’t have to say anything.
An officer can ask you questions, but you don’t have to answer.
“Even if you if you’re engaged in criminal behavior, you don’t have to respond to police,” he said. “They may have a right to detain you. They may have a right to search your property.”
Wells said remember the golden rule: anything you say can be used against you.
