LAKELAND, Tenn. — A grocery store opening was big news in Lakeland.
Wednesday, Sprouts Farmer’s Market opened its first store in Tennessee, inside the Old Kroger on Highway 64.
Around 200 were lined up outside the store wanting to be one of the first to get inside.
They were there for opening day freebies, but told us they also liked the healthy choices.
“lt’s great. It’s close and I think it will have many more choices of fruits and vegetables,” said Melody Clayton.
Lakeland leaders were on hand for the opening, and said Sprouts also represented an investment in the future of the city.
A few years ago, Kroger moved out of the same building and across the street into Memphis city limits.
The move cost the city a lot of sales tax revenue.
“Sprout shows there is commercial interest in Lakeland. It shows that we are welcoming business, that we are opening up our arms to bringing in new people,” said Commissioner Gene Torrey.
A second Sprouts will open in mid July in Germantown.
