LAUDERDALE COUNTY, Tenn. — A Lauderdale County sheriff is warning those to be cautious of swimming in certain areas after a man drowned while trying to save a child caught up in a current on Friday.
The man was identified by deputies as 46-year-old Bryan McFeely Jr. of Georgia.
According to the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the area of Porters Gap in Halls, Tennessee, regarding a possible drowning.
“The investigation determined that the people were there, I think, trying to enjoy a swim. This is no water to swim in,” said Brian Kelly, Sheriff of Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff Brian Kelly says a child got caught up in the strong current, and McFeeley tried to remove the child from the backwater.
“I think they were down there when he witnessed what was going on, and he merely was trying to save the life of this young person that unfortunately had gotten swept out, and he lost his life,” said Kelly.
The Lauderdale County EMS arrived on the scene and began life-saving measures on the man. He was taken to the Lauderdale County Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The other adults and children were removed from the waters and taken to a safe place for medical attention.
On Monday, water started to recede across some parts of Highway 88 is still surrounded by water.
Sheriff Kelly says it is dangerous and the water may look calm, but it’s fast across the roads, and someone can be swept away quickly.
