(Memphis) The suspicious packages and letters sent to the President and some U.S. Senators from Memphis has lawmakers and their employees on alert.
Congressman Steve Cohen says his staffers are taking extra precautions and using gloves and masks to open mail, “It’s just a precaution and particularly with Memphis we are just a little more aware about the possible focus toward us.”
Cohen calls the mood in Washington cautious, but most people feel safe because of safety measures in place.
The Congressman told News Channel 3 while the letters are postmarked from Memphis this crime could happen anywhere, “I would hope it’s not a Memphian but it could have been somebody just passing through. It does appear to be bipartisan in a way because they sent letters to two republican senators and the president.”
I talked to staffers for several members of congress across the Mid-South.
They say it’s mostly business as usual because all mail sent to Congress goes through a screening facility in Maryland before it gets to their offices.
Some members of Congress say the person who sent the letters and sent them through Memphis writes several members often.
The person signs the letter KC, but doesn’t but doesn’t put a return address.
