MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Leaves and debris are causing some concerns for Memphians as heavy rains are expected to hit the area over the weekend.
WREG spoke with several people who say the city has not picked up debris in some parts of town since November. Richard Hill, who is staying with his aunt on East Davant Avenue in South Memphis, said old furniture and bags of leaves had been waiting for pickup since he arrived three weeks ago.
“They got wood sitting out causing the mold, the mildew. And the dog, his dog went and chewed on some wood and got sick,” Hill said.
Percy Williams said he bagged leaves and put them out for pickup by the city since before Thanksgiving.
“I was trying to make it pretty around here for the holidays,” he said.
Memphis officials said their outside-the-cart pickups were delayed in December due to a lot of leaves falling at the same time and the holidays changing schedules.
Some people told WREG the city should have been able to predict the issue and work around it.
“I’m just letting everybody do their job. I pay my bills, so I’m looking for them to do theirs,” Williams said.
City officials said it could take them until the end of the month to get caught up on on the waste pickup.
