MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Levitt Shell is getting some tender loving care with a massive $4 million renovation.

Officials said private donations are being used to make the changes to the popular venue, which annually hosts 50 free concerts and attracts thousands to the Bluff City.

“We really want to be prepared for them and create an environment that is safe and friendly and open to everyone and has plenty of room to accommodate the amount of people we have at our concerts,”  Executive Director Anne Pitts said in a news release.

Approximately $150,000 will go toward a new food truck and concession area on the east side of the structure.

In addition, more than $425,000 will be used to expand the space used by musicians to load and unload their equipment, while $425,000 will be used to update the “Hospitality Hilltop.”

The money will also go toward updating wood decking, restrooms and wheelchair ramps, among other things.

Plus, more than $925,000 will be used to upgrade the shell’s sound, lighting and video technology.

Construction is expected to be completed by the end of April, with the new technology being installed in May.
