Lifeblood desperate for donors due to critical shortage

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Lifeblood, the region’s only non-profit volunteer blood center, has a critical shortage of all blood types.

All donor centers except the Midtown location will be open Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. in an attempt to stabilize the community blood supply. The Midtown location will be open 8 a.m. to noon.

The Bartlett, East Memphis, Germantown, and Southaven donor sites will also be open for emergency hours (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.) on Martin Luther King, Jr., day.

Walk-ins are welcome. Donors must be 17 years old (or 16 with parental consent), weigh 115 lbs., and be in generally good health.

Those who donate through February 28 will receive a 2015 Lifeblood shirt, which may be surrendered in exchange for a donation in their name to either the Mid-South Transplant Foundation, Sickle Cell Foundation, American Cancer Society, or Lifeblood.
