Local breweries are raising money for victims of California fires

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — You’ll soon be able to drink for a good cause as breweries across the country, including here in Memphis, help out with California wildfire relief efforts.

All you have to do is know what beer to order.

It’s called the Resilience Butte County Proud IPA. It’s a beer created by the Sierra Nevada Brewing Company and will be sold in breweries all over the country.

“Everybody brews the same recipe [and] uses the same ingredients. We all brew the beer and every penny from every one of those beers sold goes to the Camp Fire relief efforts in California,” said Clark Ortkiese, the Crosstown Brewing Company founder.

Sierra Nevada spearheaded the effort as their headquarters are near the fire’s destruction.

Many lives have been lost and thousands of homes destroyed.

“They need help and this is a really cool chance to straight up help other people.”

Over in Cooper Young at Memphis Made Brewing, they’re also taking part.

“The forest fire out there was just a terrible one and we wanted to help out,” said Drew Barton, Memphis Made Brewing president and head brewer.

Barton says they plan to brew ten barrels, which they’ll likely be able to sell for weeks.

Wiseacre Brewing Company will also be helping, as they get shipments of beer to sell for the fundraiser.

Showing competition can always come together for a good cause.

“It’s pretty amazing,” said Barton. “We like to help out and the magnitude we’ll be able to help out with this will be pretty big.”

The breweries don’t have specific dates yet for when the beer will be available, but they plan on it starting in mid to late December. They’ll post updates on their social media pages.

“It is going to be a classic American IPA. This is exactly what Sierra Nevada does. They brought pale ale back to America.”

All proceeds will benefit the wildfire relief efforts. More than 1,000 breweries have opted in to help nationwide.
