Local French college professor speaks out about Paris attack

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — People in the Mid-South have strong opinions about the terrorist attack in Paris, including a man who travels to and from France on a regular basis.

WREG talked to a college professor who plans to use the attacks as a learning tool.

The Rhodes College professor says he isn’t shocked by what happened over there.

Some are afraid of it happening in the U.S.

“I think anyone who follows these things can’t possibly be shocked by this,” Jonathan Judaken said.

Judaken teaches French History at Rhodes College in Memphis. He travels back and forth to France, where he studies anti-Semitism. He says the terror attack at a French magazine makes it hard to understand why anyone would take innocent people’s lives.

Judaken says when his students return from the winter break, he’s going to talk about the terror attack in his classroom.

He says it’s important to have conversations about topics impacting the world.

“It’s the kind of world that we live in, these are real issues that happen particularly so of course it’s horrific every time it happens,” he said.

Many say they’re watching this story very closely.
