MEMPHIS, Tenn. — One person is dead and two others are severely injured after two shootings happened less than three miles apart in Whitehaven Sunday, Memphis Police say.

Police say the first incident occurred in the Table restaurant on Elvis Presley Boulevard at 3:30 p.m. Reports say two victims suffering from gunshot wounds were located. Witnesses say they saw an assault-style rifle.

One victim was pronounced dead on the scene, and the other was transported to Regional One Hospital in critical condition.

Memphis Police responded to a second shooting at 3:38 p.m., only eight minutes after the first, two and a half miles down the road in the 4600 block of Elvis Presley Boulevard.

Police say a 15-year-old was shot while selling water on the side of the road. The juvenile was transported to Methodist South Hospital in critical condition by private vehicle.

Memphis Police say the two shootings are not connected. Police say this is an ongoing investigation.

Frank Gottie, an activist working to stop the violence, says he’s frustrated and angry to see both scenes.

“It don’t make no sense,” he said. “Y’all killing each other and ain’t nobody going to be around here.”

Back at the first scene, witnesses said there’s been a series of shootings. According to the city’s crime tracker, so far this year, there have been 60 aggravated assaults reported and four homicides in a one-mile radius.

A father WREG spoke to says he’s trying to shield his family from the violence.

“The stuff going on these days, people, they aren’t aware of the surroundings and they just think crazy and stuff,” said Jason Wilson. “Keep them out of this, this environment. It’s just wild out here.”

Memphis Police have not said if they have made any arrests.
