2-year-old killed, driver charged in Raleigh wreck

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A 2-year-old boy was killed and a driver charged with vehicular homicide after a car crash early Wednesday near a Memphis hospital.

The two-vehicle crash happened 10 minutes after midnight on 3775 Covington Pike and Downs near Methodist North Hospital, police said. The street was briefly closed to traffic.

According to the affidavit, 20-year-old Demarcus Hull was swerving back and forth across the roadway and eventually crossed over into the oncoming traffic.

Hull, who was driving a 2019 Nissan Sentra read ended a Chevrolet Equinox, causing that driver to lose control. The Equinox was flipped when officers arrived to the scene.

Memphis Police confirmed that a 2-year-old was found dead on the scene.

MPD said that four other victims were taken to the hospital in non-critical condition. Two of the victims were taken to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, Memphis Fire officials said.

Officers at the scene said they smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from the Nissan Sentra and that Hull appeared incoherent and confused with a slurred speech. Three grams of marijuana was found inside the vehicle, police say.

Hull was taken into custody and charged with failure to exercise due care, DUI/Driving under the influence, possession of marijuana, reckless driving, and vehicular homicide.
