MEMPHIS, Tenn. — One person was found stabbed to death after police responded to a fight call in the Edge District.

Police have charged Antwon Freeman with first-degree murder and aggravated assault.

Phillip Godwin, 61, was found stabbed to death.

It began on South Orleans Street on Monday afternoon. Police say a man and his wife were driving through Memphis when they decided to stop at High Cotton Brewery on Monroe Avenue.

Police say the victims were walking down Monroe when they were assaulted by an unknown man with a cinder block.

Police say the suspect then ran from the scene and the victim and another man followed him to a construction site. When the two men didn’t locate the man at the construction site, they got into a vehicle and continued to look for him.

According to police, two men exited their vehicle when they saw the man near a vacant building and followed him inside.

At that point, Godwin’s wife asked where her husband was. Officers returned to the Orleans scene and checked the vacant building where Godwin was found with stab wounds.

Freeman was located outside the building with blood on his hands, according to the crime report. Police say when they were arresting Freeman, he told them that he had a large kitchen knife under his shirt.

A second victim was transported to Regional One and is expected to be okay.

Freeman confessed to the crime after being taken into custody, police said. He told detectives that he was walking when someone in a white truck threw a rock at him and yelled racial slurs.

Freeman said he later saw a man who he thought was inside the white truck and struck the man in the head with a brick and then ran towards a construction site.

He said he heard footsteps running towards him and he blacked out and stabbed the man.

“Out of respect for Phil’s family and privacy We have no comment except to send our heartfelt condolences,” a representative for High Cotton wrote Tuesday.
