11-year-old shot in crowd of mostly children, police say

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — An 11-year-old girl was shot Sunday evening in Raleigh when two suspects in a car fired shots into a crowd of mostly children, police say.

WREG spoke with family members who confirmed the girl was shot in the thigh area and is expected to recover. No arrests have been made.

The girl told officers she was outside and saw a man in the back seat of a car point a gun out of the window and fire shots. MPD said the girl then ran inside of her Godmother’s home after being shot. She was taken to the hospital by her Godmother.

The shooting happened around 8:00 on Jones and Powers Road at Raleigh Court Town Home. At least 10-12 shots were fired, according to police.

A woman who asked not to be identified said her 11-year-old relative was hit in the leg by one of the dozen bullets fired at the Raleigh Court Townhomes at 8 p.m.

“She just was just saying she didn’t want to die, she was just like ‘I just don’t want to die.’ I was like you’re not going to die,” she said.

Applying pressure to the wound, she took the girl to the hospital. Monday, she’s relieved she will be okay.

“I just was so hurt because she was in my care. She was over for the weekend. It just bothered me because had it been even worser it would’ve made me feel like it was my fault. Because they were just outside playing,” she said.

Another woman said her nine-year-old was among the group of at least a dozen children, one as young as six-years-old.

“Doing just kid things. They were playing, running around, water guns, they were just playing basketball and everything. Like they was just outside playing,” she said.

Officers said the suspects are three men who were driving a black Nissan Altima with a drive-out tag. They also said the vehicle has a large dent on the rear bumper with a discolored trunk and bumper.

Family members described the suspect in the back seat of the car as a black man with dark skin complexion and chubby build.

This is an ongoing investigation.
