MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A 17-year-old is charged with first-degree murder after a woman was fatally shot outside a senior living facility earlier this month, Memphis Police say.
On March 8, a little after 2 a.m., officers responded to a shooting outside of Wesley Stage Park Senior Apartments on Battle Creek Drive in Raleigh. Officers found a female dead inside of her car.
A 17-year-old male was charged with First Degree Murder in the Perpetuation of Robbery and Especially Aggravated Robbery.
The victim was identified by police as 73-year-old Anna Hayden.
The teenage suspect had a hearing Tuesday. He will remain in juvenile detention, and the state has made it known it intends to ask that he be transferred to adult court.
According to court documents, the teen admitted to being with at least three other people looking to steal a Kia or Hyundai and planned to go to “where some old folks lived” to steal a vehicle.
After driving around the building at Wesley Stage Park retirement community, they spotted the 73-year-old victim and demanded the keys to her Kia. She said no and, according to the suspect, one of his accomplices shot her. They then took her vehicle.
Residents at Wesley Stage Park say that Hayden was a former Navy nurse who loved spreading the gospel to anyone who would listen.
Another resident at the facility told us they knew of the victim. “She was a nice lady as far as I know,” the neighbor said. “I used to see her walking every day around through here. I don’t know what she was out here doing this morning. I have no idea. I did not know her personally.”
“It’s incomprehensible to me that somebody would have such disregard for life that they would take it away from somebody over property or vehicle,” said Brian Harris, President and CEO of Wesley Living facility. “Yeah, it’s pretty disgusting to think they would prey on a vulnerable population like that. It just doesn’t register with me why anybody would do that.”
Harris says additional security has been hired to patrol the property and escort residents.
“Obviously our first priority is for the safety of our residents and we’re putting measures in place to try to maximize that,” he says.
