MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Two people were killed in a shooting in southwest Memphis Thursday night, Memphis Police say.
Officers responded to a shooting in the area of Shelby Drive and Southaven Road a little after 10:15 p.m.
They found two victims with gunshot wounds. They were both pronounced dead on the scene, according to reports.
Police have not identified the victims, but a family member, who wants to remain anonymous, identified one of the victims as 24-year-old Melvin Tabor.
Tabor was just released from prison three days ago after serving a seven-year sentence for a crime he committed when he was 17 years old, the family member said.
The relative told WREG that Tabor and a friend were walking to a nearby store when they were shot. “It sounded like the fourth of July. They got ambushed and gunned down,” he said.

According to the relative, the family ran to the scene but it was too late. They found Tabor lying in the street.
The second victim reportedly ran up the hill to a nearby Valero gas station for help. Unfortunately, he collapsed and died in the parking lot.
Tabor’s family says the second victim is not from the area.
Nonetheless, Tabor was determined to not let his past dictate his future. “He said he wanted to get a job. We were going to get a warehouse job on Monday. I was going to take him job hunting. He already had his ID and social. He was ready,” said the relative.
MPD has not released any details on a motive, leaving family members puzzled regarding who could’ve been responsible.
“We want justice. We don’t want revenge. We want justice,” the family said.
