According to court records, the first shooting happened on Sept. 2, 2024. The victim told police he was driving when he was shot at by Carruthers, who was in a silver or gray Nissan Altima.

The victim said Carruthers fired seven shots at his vehicle, damaging his rear bumper. He told investigators Carruthers was the ex-boyfriend of his new girlfriend, and before the shooting, his girlfriend had told him to leave his residence because “Matt” was coming to assault him.

On Sept. 24, 2024, the victim said he was outside his home in the 2700 block of Barron Avenue, putting air in his tire, when Carruthers emerged from the driver’s side of a gray Nissan Maxima and fired multiple shots at him from a black semiautomatic handgun.

The victim said he dropped to the ground for cover beside his car as bullets passed by his head and his vehicle several times.

The victim was not hurt, but his car had nearly $2,000 worth of damage.

Police said Carruthers was convicted of aggravated robbery in 2009. His next court date is May 9.
