MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Wynne, Arkansas teacher has been arrested and charged with sexual assault.
Wynne High School teacher Maegan Morian, 23, was booked into the Cross County jail Wednesday afternoon.
Morian teaches art at the high school. According to Wynne Police, authorities began investigating a report of an inappropriate relationship between a teacher and a student at the school.
Police say investigators determined Morian had “sexual contact” with one of her students.
Morian has been charged with sexual assault in the second degree.
In a statement, the Wynn School District said, “On Monday, April 25, Wynne School Administrators were informed that high school art teacher, Maegan Morian, had inappropriate physical contact with a Wynne High School student.”
An attorney released a statement on behalf of the Wynne School District Thursday morning. According to that statement, school administrators were notified about these allegations and the school reportedly conducted a “limited investigation” then contacted law enforcement.
“Based on the District’s investigation, Ms. Morian’s contract has been recommended for termination to the Wynne School Board,” the statement reads. “Under the Arkansas Teacher Fair Dismissal Act, Ms. Morian has a right to request a hearing before the board. This procedure is required by law for any further action to be taken.”
The school district confirms Morian will not be back on campus.
Wynne School District is reportedly offering counseling to the affected student, as well as other students if needed.
Morian was in court Thursday morning. Her bond was set at $5,000 with a no-contact order.
She has a plea and arraignment date of May 26 in Cross County Circuit Court.
