MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A 55-year-old man accused of beating his ex-wife downtown last year and shooting a witness who tried to stop the attack is now in jail.
Alfred Humphrey is charged with criminal attempt second-degree murder, possession of a firearm/dangerous felony, aggravated assault, domestic assault-bodily harm, theft of property $10,000-$60,000, convicted felon in possession of a handgun.
On September 8, 2023, officers say they responded to a shooting downtown at Wagner Place and Union Avenue.
According to reports, it started when a woman who was walking her dogs in the area saw Humphrey punching his ex-wife and knocking her to the ground.
When the woman attempted to stop him, police say Humphrey shot her point blank in the stomach. The 33-year-old said she was armed with pepper spray and planned to use it right before she was shot.
The 58-year-old woman who was allegedly being attacked told police she came down to the river to sit with her ex-husband, but he became angry because she was being too quiet.
She said he motioned for her to get back in the car, and when she refused, he pulled out a gun. She said he put the gun away and began hitting her.
The ex-wife said the woman with the dogs approached them and told her ex-husband to stop and that’s when she saw her ex-husband point his gun and shoot her.
After the shooting, Humphrey left the scene in a grey Kia Forte, which police say belonged to one of the women.
The female witness was taken to Regional One Hospital in critical condition.
A warrant was then issued for Humphrey’s arrest for attempted second-degree murder, aggravated domestic assault, and convicted felon in possession of a handgun.
On June 11, Humphrey was located at 2133 Farner and taken into custody.
He is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday morning. He is currently being held in jail on a $155,000 bond.
