MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis police and firefighters responding to a wreck in South Memphis on Wednesday morning say they found a body inside a burning vehicle.

The vehicle was found under the Airways Boulevard overpass on Carnes. It appeared to be an SUV.

Police said once the fire was extinguished, they located a body inside. The person inside was pronounced dead.

It’s a discovery that has left neighbors like Wade Chillis in shock.

“Wow,” Chillis said. “That’s devastating. A body in the car? Burn up? That would be the reaction of just about anybody I know really.”

Neighbors said this was the first time they’ve seen the SUV underneath the overpass, which is why this comes as a surprise since neighbors watch out for each other on this street.

“I don’t really think that it happened here. It may have migrated to this point, but I don’t think this is the original location where everything went down. It just ended up here like a police car chase,” Chillis said.

At this time, the cause of the fire has not been determined.

Police currently have the area blocked off as this is an ongoing investigation.
