MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a death on the Mississippi River after a body was reportedly found on top of a barge Saturday.

The Coast Guard reportedly called the sheriff’s office to the Mississippi River two miles south of the Shelby Forest boat ramp at around 7:30 a.m. after a barge owned by a company out of Illinois reported finding a woman’s body on top of it.

Investigators say they don’t know how the woman got there or how she died, but they say they are checking cameras from nearby bridges for any information or leads.

“It’s a very sad situation. Very unfortunate, but I don’t know,” Memphis resident Kenneth Parks said. “It’s hard to find the exact words about that. Not knowing all the details, still, it’s a sad situation.”

The news comes nearly a month after the body of 21-year-old Tamia Taylor was pulled from the river more than a week after she disappeared while celebrating her birthday with friends on a Memphis Riverboat Cruise.

“This is like the second or third body involving boats out here,” said Memphis resident Marilyn Lowery. “That’s kind of concerning, it kind of makes you stop and wonder, ‘What’s the deal?’”

The sheriff’s office says the woman was found without any identification. They say once they determine her cause of death, the next step will be working with the public to try to figure out who she is.

WREG also reached out to the barge company where the woman’s body was discovered but has not heard back.
