MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Buster’s Liquors & Wines was burglarized Wednesday night, and one of the suspects was detained.
Reports say five suspects backed a pick-up truck through the glass window of the business. They brought garbage cans on wheels with them to make it easier to steal items.
In all, they caused $20,000 worth of damages and stole $5,000 in merchandise.
A police officer was nearby and responded to the alarm. One of the suspects was reportedly struck by a car and caught. The other four got away.
Josh Hammond, the owner, said he is thankful one of the culprits was arrested.
“There are still plenty of others out there continuing to victimize retailers. I understand this person caught in the action tonight already has multiple felonies and warrants out for his arrest, so I’m sure he won’t be getting out anytime soon either,” he said.
He also believes the consequences of these crimes need to be stronger.
“Meanwhile, trials for these individuals need to be more expedient with severe penalties levied to send a strong message that this won’t be tolerated,” Hammond said. “In many instances, these burglaries are considered non-violent, but just look at all the damage and fear they cause in our community. It hurts sales and our tax base, and why would companies want to continue to invest?”
Buster’s was targeted in June when ten suspects backed a truck into the business and stole multiple items.
Before that, it was hit in August of 2022. Over $10,000 worth of merchandise was taken and allegedly sold out of a South Memphis apartment.
Memphis Police were in the area of the break in Thursday and arrived as thieves were fleeing. One suspect was detained near the scene.
