MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WREG)— Police say a man jumped on the back of his car and refused to let go after a carjacker took his vehicle at knifepoint just before midnight Sunday.
Elmer Sanchez said he stopped at a gas station in the 3400 block of Park Avenue to throw away some trash when a man pointed a knife at him and told him to drive.
Two friends in the Kia with Sanchez saw the knife, jumped out of the car and ran away.
“He said he had a knife and to drive, and if I didn’t, he was going to stab me,” Sanchez said.
The 24-year-old said the carjacker eventually let out of the car, and when the thief started to drive away, he jumped on the trunk and called 911.
“I held on to the antenna,” Sanchez said.
Police spotted Sanchez on the trunk of the white Kia and stopped the car at Mt. Moriah and Quince.
Sanchez told police he jumped on the trunk of the car because he worked hard to buy it.
“I’m still working for it,” he said.
Police took Tommy Cochran into custody and transported him to the Regional One Medical Center after he complained of chest pains.
He is charged with carjacking, kidnapping, reckless endangerment, and evading arrest.
Cochran’s bond is set at $350,000. He is scheduled to go before a judge on Tuesday.
