Memphis Police say a young boy, later confirmed to be four years old, was taken to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in critical condition. He was pronounced dead.

Memphis Police did not specify if the child accidentally shot himself or if someone else shot him.

This is the second child to become a victim of an accidental shooting in less than a week. The first shooting happened on Sunday afternoon on South Lauderdale Road. One man was detained in that case.

So far, Memphis Police have not said if anyone is detained in this case. The investigation is ongoing.

So far this year, 31 children 18 or under have been taken to LeBonheur with gunshot wounds.

There were 160 in all of 2024, and 33 of those were 5 years old or younger.

But Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital says there has been a 10-percent decrease in these type crimes.

“We’re really proud of that decrease, but we still have work to do,” said Dr. Regan Williams, LeBonheur Trauma Medical Director. “It is unacceptable that a 4 year old come in shot. And so the hospital, along with community really need to work together to try to keep these younger children safe.”
