MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A 17-year-old teenager was killed in a shooting at a Sonic Drive-In in Hickory Hill Friday evening, Memphis Police say.

Officers responded to the shooting at the Sonic at 4130 Kirby Parkway near Kirby High School at 5:07 p.m. Police say the teen was transported to Regional One Hospital in critical condition where he later died.

Two males have been detained, but no charges have been filed at this time, according to police.

A witness told WREG she pulled up moments after the shooting and was devastated that this happened but was even more upset that children were involved.

“I wish we would go back to the saying of knowing where your children are at night because these are literally kids, teenagers,” she said.

This isn’t the first shooting involving children at this Sonic. Last November, a 15-year-old boy was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Two 16-year-olds were charged with attempted murder. 

“It’s right next to the school and these kids are traveling back and forth to the school, and the things that are occurring are very scary,” a witness said.

A Sonic spokesperson released a statement regarding the shooting.

“We are aware of the incident that took place outside our franchised location in Memphis, TN. The franchisee is cooperating fully with local authorities as they conduct their investigation. Due to this being an active police investigation, we defer to the Memphis police department for any further comment.“

Memphis Police wouldn’t comment on what led to the shooting. Police say the investigation is ongoing.
