MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A child was shot Wednesday in the Cherokee neighborhood, police said.

The shooting happened in the 3100 block of Sharpe Avenue shortly before 3 p.m. The child, whose age was not immediately released, was taken to Le Bonheur in non-critical condition.

A relative said the girl was about 8.

Telisha Felix said the girl and her parents were on their way to visit her when the shooting happened around 2:30 Wednesday afternoon.

She said someone in a gray or silver Toyota drove up along side the red sedan they were in and fired into the vehicle as they were pulling up to Felix’s house at Sharpe and Galveston.

Felix said she doesn’t know why anyone would want to shoot at her family members.

This is at least the fourth child shot in Memphis in the last two weeks. Also Wednesday, a funeral procession was held for 7-year-old Kelby Shorty, who was killed in a North Memphis shooting on July 4.
