Credit Union donates over $50K in school supplies to Youth Villages

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Southern Security has donated $55,000 in supplies to Youth Villages to help students in need of school supplies.

Summer break is almost over and now it’s all hands on deck at Youth Villages as they get kids ready to head back to the classroom next week.

Katie Jones says for 15 years Youth Villages’ Backpack Heroes campaign has made sure Memphis students received fully supplied backpacks.

“We have everything from their papers, their rulers, their pencil pouches, expo markers,” Jones said. “This year we have added headphones because this year this is a newer need for their tech.”

450 stuffed backpacks mean 450 children in Youth Villages foster care program are ready for next school year.

“Studies show that kids that start school with what they need are more successful in the classroom,” said Dawn Graeter, CEO of Southern Security Federal Credit Union.

On August 5, thousands of Memphis Shelby County Schools students return to school so the district is also preparing.

Looking far and wide for teachers to fill vacancies, Superintendent Dr. Marie Feagins shared her vision in an interview with WREG earlier this month saying, “We will read and write every day, in every class, on every campus. That’s the bottom line. That is the fundamental expectation.”

All of the donations and school supplies will come in handy.

“This is just a way to give all of them a good start to the school year,” Graeter said.
