MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The man accused of going on a shooting spree in 2022 appeared back in court on Monday, just a month shy of the tragic event’s two-year anniversary.
Ezekiel Kelly is accused of shooting six people across the City of Memphis, killing three of them, and putting the city on lockdown.
Kelly’s attorney Michael Scholl says there have been some delays with records collection. He says that dealing with a death penalty case, requires a lot of time.
“You are going to go all the way back to when they were a child and so when you ask for the death penalty it increases all the things that you have to look into so that’s going to be taking awhile,” Scholl said.
Kelly faces 28 charges after detectives say he went on a shooting spree on September 7, and live-streamed part of it on social media.
“The victims in this matter need closure,” said prosecutor Chris Lareau.
The 21-year-old faced Judge James Jones Jr., for only two minutes on Monday. In court, Michael Scholl reassured the judge they were moving as fast as they could to get the records.
