MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis family was jolted out of their sleep Friday morning when bullets struck their home.

Those inside the Hickory Hill house were not physically harmed, but the gunman was nowhere to be found by the time police arrived. What remains are bullet holes, which stand as a harsh reminder of the violence that made its way in.

It was just after 6 a.m. when many were getting ready to start their day. Instead of an alarm going off, the sound of gunfire woke up the family living at the home on Hill Gail Drive, a few blocks from East Shelby Drive.

Detectives began working to piece together what prompted the pre-dawn shooting. Neighbors, some still in their bathrobes ventured out, wanting to know who brought violence into their community.

A husband and wife told police the gunfire caused them to jump out of bed, taking refuge on the floor where they stayed until the shooting stopped.

Sadly, their sense of safety while inside their own safe haven was shattered at that moment. They spent part of the morning sweeping up the shattered glass.

There is the possibility that home surveillance may have captured the attack on video.

This is not the first time police have responded to the surrounding area. According to the city’s data hub, from last January to the present, police have responded 116 times within a half-mile radius of this recent shooting.

That’s only when it comes to homicides, assaults, robberies, and weapon offenses.

Fortunately, no one was hurt during the incident, but a suspect has not been taken into custody for opening fire in the middle of the neighborhood.
