First look: New high school planned in Frayser

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — WREG got a first look at the architectural drawings for a new high school in Frayser.

The new school off Dellwood would merge students from MLK Prep and Trezevant high schools. Demolition on the old MLK Prep already has begun.

“I think this is going to be something that’s amazing for the community. It’s going to bring up the value where we have seen the disinvestment in the Frayser community for many years and this is a major investment,” said Shelby County Commissioner Charlie Caswell.

“Frayser has been working for many years to bring up the value of that community, bring up the hope in that community and I think the students having this kind of school, a 21st century school, a brand new football field, all the things, it’s going to be what this community needs and bring back pride to that community,” he said.

The release of the new renderings comes just days after the Memphis city council rejected a proposed location for a new high school in Cordova over traffic and safety concerns.
That school was set to replace Germantown High School.

“Let’s just be patient, I believe we will get this worked out,” Caswell said. “I think the details are still being worked out on every end, but this is what it takes sometimes when you’re bringing forth something that has been long overdue.

“We need more new schools. Not just in Raleigh and Frayser but we need them in Orange Mound, Hickory Hill. Hopefully this body and future bodies see this investment is worth it once they can see this school in the Frayser community built.”
