Four charged after Raleigh rideshare carjacking

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Four people are behind bars after a rideshare driver was shot and carjacked in the Raleigh area.

Zarena Farris, Dawone Washington, Trinity Tipton and an unnamed 17-year-old are facing multiple charges.

Police said the victim picked up the group in Frayser and drove them to the 3600 block of Beechollow Drive in Raleigh.

When they arrived, one of the men threatened the victim for his keys with a gun and shot him.

On April 2, police said the victim then left his vehicle and the man shot him in the wrist. The suspects then drove away in the victim’s car.

Ernest Nelson recalls the night a young man came banging on his door asking for help after he was carjacked.

“They shot him in the arm, and it went through his hand and grazed his chest,” Nelson said. “Once he got here, they grabbed him, put him out the car, had him on the ground and they shot him.”

Nelson also said he watched the paramedics work on the victim before he gathered the victim’s clothing and threw them away in a trash can.

“He was calm,” he said. “He gave a thumbs up when they carried him away.”

On April 4, Memphis Police officers located the car on the 4000 block of Ponca Street in Southwest Memphis. Police said two men and two women were occupying the vehicle and when they approached the suspects, all of them ran away.

After a foot pursuit, police managed to arrest all four suspects. Police said they found a black firearm in the back seat of the vehicle described by the victim.

Police said Zarena Farris, 20, waived her Miranda rights and confessed to being one of the people who stole the victim’s car.

Records indicate Zarena Farris, Dawone Washington, 19, and Trinity Tipton, 19, have been charged with carjacking, attempted second degree murder, employment of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, evading arrest.
