MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A shooting in Highland Heights left a 24-year-old man dead around 1 a.m. Wednesday.
Police say this incident was the start of a shooting spree that killed four people and injured three others.
The suspect responsible for the spree, Ezekiel Kelly, was captured just before 9:30 Wednesday night after a chase from Mississippi back into Memphis. He has been charged with murder.
Officers responded to a shooting at a home in the 3100 block of Lyndale Avenue near Baltic Street. They found victim Dewayne Tunstall dead at the scene.
According to court documents, witnesses were friends with both Kelly and Tunstall. Police said Kelly pulled Tunstall to the side to talk and during the conversation, Kelly shot Tunstall in the head.
Police said five other people were inside the home, but they were not injured.
Police also haven’t released a motive just yet but Kenny Miller, who lives in the area, said it is certain that this is another harsh reminder about the importance of staying on high alert in Highland Heights.
“Rough, totally rough. You can’t sleep at night. You have to keep one eye open all the time,” Miller said.
Despite the area being deemed one with community policing, those like Mr. Miller are telling us much too often they are seeing a community with problems. The struggle continues for those trying to make sense of what they consider to be senselessness.
“They need to get whatever it is, out of the air and maybe the world would be a better world,” Miller said.
