MEMPHIS, Tenn. — There was a heavy police presence at Baptist Memorial Hospital in East Memphis as police responded to a call about two shooting victims and a suspected car burglary Monday night.
According to police, everything started with a shooting in Hickory Hill. Two victims arrived at the hospital by a private vehicle around 7:46 p.m. While MPD was at the hospital investigating, they noticed the men’s family members trying to enter the men’s vehicle.
It’s not clear why they were trying to get into the car.

As officers detained three of the relatives for questioning, even more family members aggressively approached them. An MPD spokesman said due to the growing crowd and rising tension, they had to call for backup.
That’s when officers found a backpack possibly related to the shooting earlier in the night in Hickory Hill. It contained 25 live 9mm rounds and a 50-round drum magazine.
The shooting caused chaos inside the Emerald Park Apartments, as bullets from the shooting landed in the residence of a family of four.
“My children were hollering and screaming. We didn’t know what was going on. They said the shooting was happening next door in the other apartments, and all of a sudden, it came through my apartment,” said the woman whose apartment was hit.
No one in her apartment was hurt.
MPD said a witness saw two people sitting inside a vehicle and a third person standing outside. According to the witness, the two people inside the car were fighting when shots rang out.
All three men were hit, but are expected to be okay.
According to MPD, the vehicle the men being treated at Baptist drove to the hospital fits the description of the vehicle involved in the shooting.
Baptist released the following statement regarding the incident:
The health and safety of our patients, visitors and staff members are our top priorities. We are still getting the facts about the situation that occurred last night, but we can confirm our campus was never compromised and was always safe. To avoid jeopardizing the active investigation being led by the Memphis Police Department, it would be inappropriate for us to share any other details. However, we would like to acknowledge our campus security team for staying alert and immediately reporting their concerns to MPD. We would also like to express our gratitude to MPD for their quick response and large show of support. Please direct any questions to MPD about their active investigation.
At this time no arrests have been in the incident at Baptist or the shooting.
