MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man is dead after a shooting Friday morning on South Highland near Park Avenue.

The call came in to police dispatch as a shooting around 3:45. Police said one male victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses say they heard police cars flying down Highland and saw them surround a music studio on the corner.

A section of Highland south of Park was blocked off for much of the morning as police searched for evidence.

A woman at the scene could be heard screaming, “No Jesus, why did they take my baby?”

The city’s crime tracking map shows police reported 39 crimes within a quarter-mile radius in the last month, including weapon violations, vehicle theft and intimidation. Just last week, they responded to a burglary next door to the studio.

It came as a shock to some neighbors.

“I’ve been staying over here for 44 years. This part is probably one of the best parts of the neighborhood,” said Leonard Rivers, who passed the scene on the way to work.

Friday’s deadly violence marks the city’s 112th homicide so far this year.
