UPDATE: The Memphis Library Foundation released a statement regarding Monday’s incident.
“Our thoughts are with all those affected by this heartbreaking incident. As we come together to mourn and heal, we must remember the importance of supporting one another during difficult times.”
They went on to say the foundation “extends our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the individual whose life was lost.”
“We thank you for your ongoing support and encourage you to keep those affected by today’s events in your thoughts and prayers,” said the Memphis Library Foundation.
Memphis Public Libraries announced that Benjamin Hooks Library will remain closed until Monday, July 29, so the library staff and community “can process and have time to access mental health and wellness resources, including grief counselors.”
All other Memphis Public Library branches will remain open.
The fundraising event, Library Love is Permanent, which was scheduled to take place on Monday prior to the tragic incident, will be rescheduled, and a new date will be announced at a later time.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Benjamin Hooks Library on Poplar Avenue closed for the remainder of the day Monday after police responded to what they said appeared to be a suicide inside the building.
A witness at the scene reported on X that they saw a man who had fallen from an upper floor inside the lobby.
Memphis Public Library announced on Facebook Monday afternoon that the library will be closed for the rest of the day – this includes the Library Love tattoo event that was scheduled to take place on Monday.
