Man charged with double murder for killing pregnant woman, police say

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis police arrested a man Tuesday who is accused of shooting and killing his pregnant girlfriend in December.

The shooting happened on Dec. 3, 2021, on the 3800 block of Ford Road in Southwest Memphis.

According to court documents, a woman called MPD to tell them that her child’s father, Nakia Jackson, was responsible for the shooting of Ashanti Smith.

The woman said Jackson, 26, came to her house to drop off some food with his girlfriend, Smith, waiting in the car.

Around 10:40 p.m., MPD was contacted about a car crashing into a fence on Ford Road. The caller said she saw a male running from the vehicle as it continued to drive across the street and stop in a field.

When police arrived, they located Smith. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The medical examiner stated Smith was between 18 to 20 weeks pregnant at the time.

Court documents revealed the mother of Jackson’s children turned him in after he showed up to her home and then confessed to her about what he did.

The woman told police that Jackson stated that he made a mistake and admitted to shooting Smith.

Jackson has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder. One count is for Smith; the other is for her unborn baby she was carrying, police said.

Jackson was also charged with being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun.
