MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A shooting on Beale Street in Downtown Memphis Sunday morning left one man dead, Memphis Police say.
According to reports, officers responded to the shooting at Jerry Lee Lewis’ Cafe and Honky Tonk at 310 Beale Street just before 2 a.m. A man was transported to Regional One Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Police say a man has been detained.
A witness on the scene says she was standing near the victim when the shooting happened. She claims the entire altercation started with a spilled drink.
The woman described the gunman as a taller man.
“The tall dude knocked the dude with the beard cup out of his hand. When he knocked the cup out of his hand, he started swinging,” she said.
Witnesses described the altercation as a “tussle,” and claimed the suspect abruptly shot the victim in the stomach.
“He literally pulled the gun out with no hesitation. Like, boom right then and there,” said the woman. “It could’ve easily been resolved. Like, you didn’t have to knock the cup out of his hand. You didn’t have to pull the gun out and shoot him. Everything could’ve went another direction.”

Witnesses also said that before police arrived at the scene, one woman began doing CPR on the victim, attempting to save his life.
Jerry Lee’s club responded Monday, saying they were “very saddened by this most recent act of violence in our city.” But they wanted to stress that the incident occurred on Beale Street, not inside their business.
They said the victim did not work there. The accused shooter, however, had been employed “intermittently as a door man on a few occasions but he was not working on the night of the incident.”
