MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Detectives found a man shot dead in a South Memphis neighborhood Tuesday, and a witness says the body had been set on fire.
Officers were called to the 1400 block of Gold Avenue just before 7 a.m. They say they found a victim with an apparent gunshot wound, who was pronounced dead on the scene.
Police later confirmed that the victim’s name is Larry Thorn.
A witness, who did not want to be named, told WREG he saw the victim’s body burning in a parking lot behind a boarded-up church, as he drove by to visit family in the area.
Police have not confirmed that the body was set on fire, but the witness showed a reporter a cellphone picture of a fire in the church parking lot. A charred spot was visible on the ground Wednesday.
“I was just shocked to see that it happened outside a church,” the witness said.
WREG is reaching out to possible family members of Thorn.
