Man wanted in shooting death of ex-girlfriend

UPDATE: Travis Cohens was booked in the Shelby County Jail on June 21, 2022, on charges of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated, assault, vandalism, felon in possession of a handgun, and using a gun to commit a felony

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Police are searching for the man they say is responsible for shooting his ex-girlfriend to death in North Memphis.

Travis Cohens, 30, is wanted for the murder of Teonka Gunn.

Teonka Gunn

The shooting happened at the Saint Court Apartments on North Watkins on March 1. Police say Gunn was found lying on the ground outside of her apartment with multiple gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead on the scene.

Gunn’s sisters said a cousin had just dropped her off when Cohens opened fire on his car, chased down Gunn, and shot her point-blank.

“He stood over her and pistol-whipped her, and she put her hands to her face to protect her face.. and he shot her about ten times,” said Cassandra McClatchey.

The cousin’s young son was also in the car’s back seat but was not hurt.

Gunn’s sisters say she dated Cohens for about two years but had been trying to leave him for months.

Court records show he was already facing charges in two separate incidents from October involving Gunn.

“I didn’t know it was that bad. She called me back in October screaming and yelling he was going to kill her then,” McClatchey said.

Family members are hoping Gunn’s story will encourage others in abusive relationships to get out and get help.

“There are people willing to help. You just have to be brave to keep reaching out for help,” said her sister Tomeka Lawson.

Cohens is wanted for first-degree murder, two counts of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of employment of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, and being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun.

Gunn’s sisters say as long as Cohens is on the streets, others are in danger and are asking anyone who knows where he is to contact the police.

“Because if it was nothing for him to kill my sister, it would be nothing to do that to somebody else,” said Lawson.

If you have any information on Cohens’ whereabouts, call Crime Stoppers at (901)-528-CASH. There is a $2,000 reward.
